Chinese abstract

A railway is a machine for making time visible. Tracks, signals, depots, timetables, spare parts, night shifts — each piece is ordinary on its own. Together they are a system that tells people where to be, and when.

What holds my attention is not only the train. It is the world built around the operation. In northern China, the staff living quarters beside a station or a depot make that world easy to see. Homes, a shop, a clinic, a school, a gate, and then the line. The layout is not a coincidence. It follows the work. Sleep is placed near the shift. A fence follows the right-of-way. A technical network becomes a neighborhood.

Industrial systems interest me for the same reason. A control cabinet, a workshop, a freight yard, and a street of staff housing are different scales of one question: how a designed system arranges human life around itself, and how that life pushes back.

This note is not a history of Chinese railways. It is a way of looking I want to practice here. The next piece this page is owed is more specific: a plan of one place, what sits next to the tracks, and why it sits there.
